The Former British Consular Residence at Dagou (originally named Former British Consulate) is among the most popular historic and cultural museums in Taiwan. According to the latest historical studies, the Former British Consulate at Dagou was actually a consular residence completed in 1879; it was used as a venue for receiving ambassadors and guests in addition to accommodation purposes. Designed and constructed by the British Army’s Royal Engineers, this building is a stand-alone red-brick structure with wooden corridors. The British Consulate office (including the Constable’s Quarters and jail) is located in the seaside of Shaochuantou with an ancient hiking trail connecting the two buildings. The Former British Consular Residence had long been mistaken for the British Consulate because of the lack of relevant historical materials. It was not until some scholars carried out a thorough investigation into the historical records of the UK National Archives that the consulate office was confirmed to be situated in the seaside of Shaochuantou, and that this building was in actuality a consular residence. In order to ensure the authenticity and correspond to historical reality, the Bureau of Cultural Affairs of Kaohsiung City Government corrected its name in 2009.
